Prescription Drug Abuse - Harming Newborns
Prescription drug abuse continues to be in the forefront of drug testing and is a growing problem.
The increased use and addiction to painkillers has now surfaced in the most vulnerable of patients - newborns, according to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The number of babies born addicted to these painkillers has nearly tripled in the last decade, which equates to one baby per hour, according to the study.
Dr Stephan Patrick of the University of Michigan Health Centre Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the lead author of this study, indicated that "Generally, babies are soothed by wrapping or holding or being fed. Typically these babies can't be consoled".

The stage at which a baby develops is a very delicate part in human life cycle as it is in this particular stage that brain is just starting to build itself. Chemicals might affect the formation of the brain in either positive or negative way. This is one great reason that a mother should not be engaging herself to both drugs and alcohol especially during pregnancy. Otherwise, she must be taken into a rehab centre.
ReplyDeleteDrug abuse for pregnant women is not good. It will harm the baby that she's carrying in her womb. If she can't turn away with drugs, don't get pregnant. Don't just think of you own pleasure. If you want to change, have an addiction intervention. It'll save you and your baby.
